Answering service pricing can range from a low monthly base fee for very light usage to more than $1,000 per month for several hundred minutes of premium human receptionist time. The useful comparison is not the smallest advertised plan. It is the total recurring cost at your expected call volume and call length.
The main pricing models
Most live answering services use one of four structures:
- monthly plan with included receptionist minutes
- monthly base plus per-minute usage
- per-call pricing
- hybrid AI and human usage
These units should not be treated as interchangeable. A five-minute call under a per-call model and five receptionist minutes under a minute plan can produce very different economics.
Current Q3 2026 examples
The CCM published-pricing sample includes providers such as PATLive, Ruby, Abby, MAP Communications, Specialty Answering Service, Moneypenny, Go Answer, AnswerConnect and Answering Service Care. Published 100-minute human-service plans in this sample span roughly from the high-$100s into the high-$300s, depending on the provider and plan structure. At 500 minutes, the spread is much larger.
Representative current examples include PATLive at about $189 for 100 minutes, Ruby at about $395 for 100, Abby at about $329 for 100 Abby Minutes, MAP at about $179 for 125 minutes, Specialty Answering Service at about $159 for 100, and Moneypenny at about $265 for 100. These plans do not include identical features, and some providers use different billing increments or setup fees.
Model the cost at your usage
For a minute-based plan:
Monthly Cost = Base Plan + max(0, Usage - Included Minutes) x Overage Rate
Then calculate:
Effective Cost Per Minute = Monthly Cost / Actual Minutes
A plan with a higher monthly fee may become cheaper once a lower-priced plan begins charging overage.
Setup fees and first-year cost
Recurring price is not always the complete first-year cost. Keep setup or activation charges separate:
First-Year Cost = 12 x Monthly Recurring Cost + One-Time Setup Fees
Go Answer has had conflicting first-party setup-fee information across its materials, so buyers should confirm the applicable charge. AnswerConnect also has plan-specific setup treatment.
Billing increments matter
A service that rounds every interaction to a full minute can cost more than a service that bills in smaller increments when many calls are short. Do not compare only the posted overage rate.
Human, AI and hybrid pricing
AI receptionists can be substantially less expensive for structured conversations, but AI usage should be separated from human receptionist usage. Smith.ai, Abby and Answering Service Care illustrate how vendors increasingly mix these models.
CCM benchmark
In the inaugural Q3 2026 CCM Answering Service Price Index sample, the standardized recurring medians are approximately:
- 100 minutes: $189
- 200 minutes: $349
- 500 minutes: $759
These are sample medians, not claims about every answering service in the market.
What to request before buying
Confirm in writing:
- included minutes or calls
- overage rate
- billing increment
- setup fee
- 24/7 availability
- bilingual charges
- scheduling or integration fees
- contract term
- trial terms
- what happens when usage exceeds the plan
Bottom line
Answering services should be compared at a standardized workload. The lowest starter price is often not the lowest total cost.
